Of course, Michael Powel got where he is today the same way Bush did; Daddies friends...

Dean had posted a comment below, and amplified those comments on his own site. They demand, I think, a bit of comment…

First, I don't think Dean read my entire entry. That, or it was poorly written. But on a point by point:
Discrimination is okay as long as it's done in equal proportion to the population is what you're saying.
I talk about neither discrimination nor proportionalism. I made the comment that it is harder for the poor to achieve as much as the non-poor, and thus this achievement should be recognized. Rail all you wish against the fact that "black" is being used as a proxy for "poor" (I do), the fact is that African-Americans are wildly over-represented in the "poor" category…

And let us be clear: a millionaire black man's child deserves the special considerations that my child does not. You think this is so because there is no other way to fix the "injustices."
Dean, you used the word "injustices", not I. And, yes, for the sake of clarity, I am quite willing to see an African-American child of a millionaire get the bonus we would normally think of as being for (poor) African-American children. An occasional outlier does not invalidate the whole program. I said as much when it penalized me personaly, so bringing your son into it won't change that...

Will you ever consider the possibility that the real cause of the problems you cite may not be racism? May in fact be aggravated by the solution you advocate?
I never once mentioned racism...

Your second point bears study. Of course, we've yet to see evidence of lasting harm done to people who got into (say) Yale, or (say) Michigan State because their parents got in...

And when will you tell the children of poor inner city Arab, Asian, Indian, Hispanic, and of course, white children (who make up a majority of the poor and uneducated, by the way) that they no longer have to give these special privileges to their neighbors?

Dean, now you are talking! I would love to see "race" not used as a factor. I would love to see bonuses given for children of low-income parents. I would love to see "race" not being used as a proxy for "poor" when "poor" does a much better job of predicting "poor". Since no one seems to be suggesting this, I'll take what programs there are...
