the american street: On marriage....
What marriage does--in a legal sense, is make sure that both parties (and their families) have recourse if the deal would somehow fall through (divorce, death, extra-marital offspring). there's nothing in that little slip 'o cardboard that the government gives you that tells you what marriage requires, outside of being of a certain legal age to enter into the contractual agreement. No "love" or "children" or "don't go sniffin' around the henhouse now and again if you know what's good for you..."Hand that man a cigar...
