What is America’s Central Story?

Sorry I haven’t been able to get this question below, and don’t have a whole lot of time for it now (believe me when I say I’ve killed a few minutes thinking about it at work!), but I believe that America’s Central story is the same line your mother handed you:

If you work hard and are dedicated, you can do anything you want to.

The American government is dedicated to getting obstacles the hell out of people’s way. The American Right thinks that government itself is the greatest obstacle. The American Left thinks big business is. We centrists fear them both...

Discuss!

"The Right’s view of government and the Left’s view of big business are both correct." - Robert Anton Wilson

I tend to not be a moderate, but I also think both government and business must be watched.

"Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action." - George Washington

The same applies to businesses. Corporations can be very efficient at getting something done, but un-checked they can do, and have done, a lot of harm.

When dealing with large concentrations of power, a little paranoia is a good thing.

That may have been back in the day, but now I would say Americans live by:

If you sit around and do nothing, the government will give you what you want.

The people on welfare, the people in public housing, the people on unemployement, the career politicians, and the old timers who didn't bother to plan their retirement and can't pay for their medicines or anything else will concur.

This may have been the fairy tale (perpetuated by a few successes and a lot of selective memory to write off all failures as insufficiently motivated) back in the day, but now I would say Americans live by:

If you work just a little, and the government, big business, welfare cheats or some other evil cabbal don't steal what is rightfully yours, you will be living the wonderful life of luxury. What is the difference between you and all those people on tv getting millions with ease? The government, big business, welfare cheats, trial lawyers and other evil cabbals are not out to get them, so they get $600 for the letter "T." So just call our number, take our pill to get fit, listen to our tapes and get money for nothing, GET YOUR SLACK NOW! and hope THEY don't take it from you.
