Sometimes I wonder...

So, 95% of Americans have sex before they get married. Yet a good many Americans want the State to teach their children not to have sex before marriage. Seems like a bit of a conundrum, eh?

Perhaps the logic goes something like: If my child is old enough to have sex, I am getting old. Therefore, if we can delay the time until my child has sex, I can put off my own death.

I don't think it's conscious, but I can't think of any good reasons not to bow to the inevitable of teenaged hormones and teach them to be safe...

Total agreement. One of the things that continues to bother me even now that I'm well past teenagerhood is that even comparatively "sex-positive" education still proceeds from the assumption that "It'd be best if you didn't have sex. But if you absolutely must defile yourself, you can minimize the horrors you have brought upon yourself and your family by practicing safe sex." -- even if the message _isn't_ "Abstinence only", it almost always implies that if you don't abstain, it's a personal failure.

Even beyond the effect it has on safe sex practices, I'm inclined to say that the way we present sex as either "Don't do it" or "Try not to do it and if you fail, at least take precautions" is responsible for the massive sexual hangups we as a society have. I'd almost go so far as to suppose that we might encourage teenagers _to_ have sex, just to get it out of their systems so they could get on with their lives without the shadow of it hanging over their heads.
