Poor fool

Toots over at gay gamer relates an amusing tale.

Basically, some schmuck tries to pick up on random girls on PSN. Girls who are, you know gaming. Girls who are hoping to kick noob ass, not be picked up like a piece of one. Instead he tries to hit on runs into a very gay, very male person.

Perhaps the young boy was simply manifesting unconscious desire for members of his own gender. Nothing wrong with that...

I'm going to sue

I've not only not lost weight, I've gained weight since becoming a reader of 20sided. These false claims must end.

Sleep.

So: everyone has had a night when they simply could not sleep. The next day we wake up, tired, groggy, unable to properly process all the stimulus that a human being encounters throughout a day. Imagine you're awake for longer than a single night. Your brain begins to break down. Wikipeida has a good summary on what happens. That's what we're doing to people we suspect of being terrorists.

It is 2008. This is the United States of America. We're debating torture. Thomas Jefferson is weeping...

Memo to Stephanie Tubbs Jones:

Were Barack Obama actually a native of Somalia, he would be ineligible for the American presidency. Or perhaps you simply mean that since Somalia is in Africa, and that Obama's father was born in Kenya, and Kenya is next to Somalia, therefore Obama is Somali. Alternately, perhaps you mean that all African Americans are actually natives of Africa. Either way, I suggest that you reexamine your logic.

Happy birthday:

Gregorian Calendar.

At 426 years old, you don't look a leap day over 400!

I'd like to write a bit more about the history, but Wikipedia does an admirable job of it. So, go ahead and post your favorite Gregorian Calendar fact in the comments bellow.

This is parody, right?

The real problem with the American political culture? The disenfranchisement of straight white men.

In conclusion: I’ve been playing a lot of Zelda on my DS...

So: a couple months ago, I picked up Bioshock on Steam (no DRM). I went to play it and… was informed that my video card sucked.

So, this week I looked at my bank and said “hey, I’ve got some extra cash. I can totally buy a new video card.” Looking at the specs on my motherboard, though, it turns out that I’ve only got room for a PCI-E(X4), and any video card I get needs to be PCI-E(X16). So, I tacked on a new motherboard to my order.

The parts arrive, I go to install them, and windows wants to be reinstalled. Fine.

I format my C drive, go to reinstall windows, and… My RAM is bad– every time it hits a bad sector (often!), windows crashes. I had noticed this problem before, but didn’t quite realize it was the RAM. Now windows won’t reinstall.

So: I ordered new RAM. It should arrive today.

Thing I don't get:

It shouldn't be all election, all the time, but...
I've heard people say that they want McCain because he provides leadership. They prefer Obama, though. But not Clinton.

Here's the thing: Clinton and Obama basically want to go the same way. That way will be the exact opposite of the way McCain wants to go. How on Earth can anyone's preference set include two candidates of mutually incompatible goals, but not two candidates of nearly identical goals? I guess "leadership" is looking manly in front of a camera. In this view "off a cliff" and "towards a better tomorrow" are treated equally as "direction". Or something...

McCain Rebuts

I really do hope it's a race between Obama and McCain. It would be 1992 all over again...

Tentative deal to end the Strike

This blog is very much pro-labor. Having been a union man myself-- and always having been a member of the suburban proletariat, I know exactly what it means to not have a collective bargaining agreement with an employer. If case you're wondering: it means that you take whatever the boss wants to give you, and you (in the words of one former employer) are "grateful you have a job".

Anyway, there's a deal on the table. It's going to the Guild for a vote. There's a copy of the deal memo online. It looks like it adresses most of the major points of contention, though I'm not cognizant enough of the fine points to say if this is a good deal or not. If it's being brought to the guild, it's probably an acceptable deal-- a step up from a year ago...

Yes we Can!

The reason I'm an Obama supporter-- an enthusiastic Obama supporter-- is that he consistently identifies America in the along the lines I think of when I think of America. The Declaration of Independence. The abolitionist movement. Labor rights. Women's rights. The moon shot. Dr. King. Justice. Equality. The scrappy underdog who strives, seeks, and does not yield.

None of these things have to do with being the strongest, greatest nation on Earth. All of them involve being a strong, good people. A people who dare to dream. I'll pull the lever for Hillary. Obama engages with my hopes and aspirations. He'll make a fantastic president.

Follow the money

To take this a bit further than Ezra:
To get money from people, you have to offer them something. To get money from rich folk you have to, at the very least, not offend them. But you probably have to give them something. That creates a certain type of politics. To get money from broad stretches of the middle class, you have give them something. The interest of the middle class and the rich are different, where they are not actually at odds.

If Obama can get elected on the strength of donations from large parts of the middle class-- and if he is seen to do so by future candidates-- expect to start seeing a different set of priorities being rolled out over the next several year. This may end up being the big "breakthrough for democracy" we were promised with the internet...

Make mine Obama

So: Obama is probably not going to win the Democratic Nomination. That's fine-- in fact, that's why I'm going to vote for him. See, I _want_ to vote for him. I think he'd make a tremendously good president. But he's going to lose the primary. Therefore I'll vote for him (because I won't have another chance to do so), and in November I get to vote for Hilary-- who will also make a tremendously good president. I get to vote for 2 awesomely good candidates this year. How lucky is that?
